As I was considering a scripture to focus on for this month's Wednesday's Word, I was distracted by several conversations I've had recently concerning heavy decisions friends are struggling to make, along with decisions we are currently fumbling through in our own home. I've said, and heard it said, "It's just so hard to know for sure, what God wants." And it is. No doubt. I would never presume to convince you that large, life changing decisions are easy.
As these thoughts were on my mind, driving home from the grocery with the kids, a song came on by King and Country. I'm not sure what it's called, but my kids all shouted, "Turn it up! I love this song." and started singing the words, Oh, oh God, forgive us. I was singing along when the words of the chorus hit me... A slave to our uncertainty, help us with our unbelief. Oh, oh God, forgive us. And I thought, that's it! We are slaves to our uncertainty.
Think of the major decisions before you.... chances are, you've called your friends, you've compared to what others have, or have not, done, you've asked your mom, you've searched online, or a multitude of other sources, all of which, with best intentions, are looking out for what's easiest, what's coolest, what's safest or most culturally popular. But how many of them are seeking God's direction? Are you? Have you taken it to the throne? Have you searched scripture? Do you have the deep in the gut feeling that tells you, you already know what you should do, but you're scared? It doesn't make sense? People will think you're crazy? Or it will just be downright hard? Have you prayed... and then waited for wisdom?
Have you considered Psalm 18:30? This God- His way is perfect; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
His way is perfect. Not our way, not societies way, not your best friends, or the social media masses way. Only His. And scripture also tells us in Isaiah 55:8-9, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are you ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. In other words, it's not always going to make sense to us. But, isn't that where faith comes in? Where lip service ends and obedience begins?
It's scary. I'll give you that. And we haven't always been faithfully obedient. We've chosen the culturally popular, or easier path at times, but we've also chosen the "you guys must be crazy" path, and the blessings there are immeasurable.
So, I'll leave you with this thought.... If you are in the middle of big decisions, I'm not saying you shouldn't ask your trusted people for perspective, but I am saying you should trust what God has for you, even when it's scary, doesn't make sense and everyone thinks you're crazy. You will be blessed there, immeasurably.
